ROAMING INTO THE WILDERNESS: A Journey Through Iceland’s Raw Majesty by Simran Kaur

There is a certain allure to wide, untamed lands that beckons the creative soul. Iceland, with its stark landscapes and dramatic contrasts, had long been a dream of mine. My inspiration? A Donna Karan campaign etched in my memory, shot amidst an expansive, almost otherworldly terrain. That imagery not only drew me to Iceland but also ignited my passion for landscape fashion photography—a genre that remains unjustly overshadowed in an age dominated by portraiture. Social media’s rigid standards may favor the close-up, but landscapes possess their own stories, ones that demand space, scale, and the courage to embrace the vast unknown.

The Cold Embrace
of Iceland
Arriving in Iceland, the wind greeted me like a sharp reminder of nature’s power, burning my skin and stripping away all preconceived notions of comfort. For four days, the concept of time dissolved. The perpetual daylight, a phenomenon so foreign to my urban rhythms, blurred the boundaries between day and night. What emerged was an ethereal blend of moments—a suspended reality where I existed outside the clock’s constraints.
Despite the cold, Iceland's warmth lay in its transient community. Travelers from across the globe—America, the UK, Italy, and beyond—converge here, making it a global crossroads. For many, Iceland is a brief respite, a pitstop en route to Europe or the Americas. Yet, for those who linger, it reveals itself as a sanctuary of nature. Here, I found a healing energy, a solace absent from the rigid, surgical precision of city life. Nature in its purest form compelled me to release the weight of a transformative year, filled with changes, challenges, and ultimately, growth.
Nature’s Palette:
Landscapes of Contrast
Driving from one location to the next, Iceland’s diverse terrains unfolded like chapters in an epic tale. The seaside melted into rolling mountains, each scene distinct yet harmoniously part of the same narrative. Volcanic rocks bore the scars of the Earth’s fiery past, their deep reds and blacks contrasting with the moody greens of moss-covered plains. The play of light and shadow—clouds racing across the sky and casting fleeting highlights on the peaks—made the land feel alive, as if it breathed alongside us.
Water, too, told its story. Sulphur-scented hot springs evoked both discomfort and nostalgia, a sensory paradox I came to embrace. Cold waters, though unswimmable, awakened a primal vitality within me. My toes froze instantly upon contact, yet the icy sting was a reminder of life’s intensity, a moment of clarity amidst nature’s overwhelming beauty.
Connection in Solitude
For this journey, I chose simplicity over luxury, staying in a shared dormitory for the first time. Serendipity placed me beside a fellow traveler I had met on the flight. A recent graduate from Manchester on her own solo adventure, she and I bonded in nightly conversations that stretched into the early hours. In just four days, we forged a connection that felt timeless, much like Iceland itself.
Time moved differently here. Each day was both fleeting and eternal, and the rhythm of the natural world dictated our pace. Yet, amidst this timelessness, I found a clarity that had eluded me for so long. Iceland became a mirror, reflecting not only the raw beauty of its landscapes but also the internal shifts I needed to embrace.
A Farewell, and a
Chance Encounter
Leaving Iceland felt bittersweet. As I returned to London, a curious twist of fate awaited me. Disembarking the plane, I crossed paths with someone I knew: a barista from my favorite café, Katuste 100. Our surprise at meeting—thousands of miles from our usual setting—was a fitting conclusion to a trip marked by unexpected connections and revelations.
Iceland’s wilderness is more than a backdrop; it is an active force, shaping those who dare to roam into its depths. For me, it was not just a destination but a transformation, a reminder of the creative potential that lies in embracing the untamed, both within and without.
